When the doors of our historic building open, a diverse community is invited inside to experience Jewish life on terms that resonate individually. In addition to weekly Shabbat services and annual holiday celebrations, Sixth & I offers a variety of discussion-based courses and groups that serve as a catalyst for modern discourse on an ancient religion. See below for information about our unique offerings.

Please contact Beth Semel with questions and for enrollment information.

Jewish Welcome Workshop: An in-depth introduction to Judaism

• Substantive • Spiritual • Relevant • Nonjudgmental • Inclusive • Fun •

This 30-week introductory course is for those interested in converting or learning more about Judaism. Participants will learn about Judaism both in the classroom and through the larger Sixth & I community. At the end of the program, participants will be prepared to convert to Judaism or live as a Ger Toshav ("fellow traveler") with the Jewish people. This class also welcomes those who are Jewish and are looking to learn more about their own heritage.

For those in their 20s and 30s

Taught by Rabbi Shira Stutman, Sixth & I's Director of Jewish Programming.

For information regarding the 2013-2014 class beginning next fall, contact

Adult B'nai Mitzvah Course*

Never had a Bar or Bat Mitzvah? Or did you have one back in the '80s or '90s and only remember the after-party? Do you simply want to learn more about services? If you answered "yes" to any of these questions, please consider enrolling in our B'nai Mitzvah class.

Participants will spend 30 weeks learning about Jewish approaches to prayer, spirituality, and G-d, as well as the ins and outs of Friday night and Shabbat morning services. At the end of the course, if you choose, you can become a B'nai Mitzvah on our historic bimah. Basic Hebrew reading skills required, comprehension not necessary.

Taught by Rabbi Scott Perlo, Sixth & I's Associate Director of Jewish Programming.

For those in their 20s and 30s

Coupling: Creating a Jewish Home Together

In this workshop, couples who are in long-term partnerships or married will explore what it means to create a Jewish home. Through guided conversation, couples will talk, learn, and discover ways to infuse Jewish values and traditions into their homes and lives.

Blu Greenberg’s How to Run a Traditional Jewish Household will serve as a springboard for conversation about Shabbat practice, how/if you will “keep” Kosher, dealing with family, issues surrounding children, the search for a community that suits both of you, and other topics.

The group will be facilitated by Rabbi Scott Perlo. For the benefit of all participants involved, attendance is expected at all four sessions.
