Q. What is Sixth & I all about?
A. Sixth & I Historic Synagogue is a non-denominational, non-membership, non-traditional synagogue and cultural center where the lines of devotion blur and programs speak to personal, spiritual, and social interests. Read more about us here.

Q. If I’m not Jewish, can I still come to Sixth & I events?
A. Yes, of course. Sixth & I is for everyone. Many of Sixth & I’s events are secular and our religious-themed events are open to all. We encourage you to come to any and all events in which you feel comfortable participating, exploring, and learning.

Q. Where is Sixth & I located?
A. Sixth & I is in the heart of downtown Washington, DC at the intersection of 6th St. and I St. NW (that’s how we got our name!). The address is 600 I Street NW.

Q. Is Sixth & I located near a Metro station?
A. Yes. Sixth & I is conveniently located two blocks from the Gallery Place-Chinatown Metro station (Red, Yellow, and Green lines). Use the 7th and H St. exit from the station.

Q. Does Sixth & I have a parking lot?
A. No. Metered street parking is available in the neighborhood surrounding Sixth & I. Nearby parking lots include the PMI Parking Lot (6th and Massachusetts Avenue, entrance on Mass.), the Verizon Center Parking Lot (6th and G Streets, entrance on 6th), and the City Center Parking Lot (9th and I Streets, entrance on 9th Street).

Q. What are Sixth & I’s hours?
A. Sixth & I’s administrative business hours are Monday through Thursday, 9:00 am to 5:00 pm and Friday, 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. The building is open additional hours for events, but administrative activities do not take place during those times.

Q. Is Sixth & I handicap accessible?
A.
Yes, we have been accessible since 2008. Because we are a contributing building to a historic neighborhood and could not change the façade of our building, we have a lift system to enter the building and to access the different floors (no outdoor ramps). As a courtesy (not required), if you or someone you are with intends on using the lift system, please call the office at 202.408.3100 in advance so we can anticipate your arrival.

Q. Do you offer tours of the synagogue?

A. Yes. Tours with our head docent occur on most first Sundays of the month. Check the calendar for scheduled offerings. Daily walk-in tour hours are from 1:00 to 2:00 pm, Monday through Friday. These tours are free, but we greatly appreciate donations to our tzedakah box. Can’t make it to an in-person tour? No worries; you can also take a virtual tour here.

Q. Can I become a member and join Sixth & I?

A. Sixth & I is non-membership-based. We have a fluid community of locals, long-time Washingtonians, newcomers, tourists from around the world, and anyone looking to put a little more ‘gogue in their life. If you’re moved by what you experienced and are inspired to give back, we appreciate your financial or volunteer support.

Q. How can I find out about upcoming Sixth & I events?
A. Well, you’re already on our website, so the easiest thing to do would be to explore the site further. Sign up here to receive our weekly email of upcoming events. Sign up here to receive our monthly postcard mailing. Connect with us Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube.

Q. Where do events take place within the synagogue?
A. Sixth & I’s sanctuary dates back to 1908. With its beautiful stained-glass windows, breath-taking dome, and near-perfect acoustics, this 830-person capacity space is a platform to experience the best in arts, entertainment, and spirituality.

Downstairs is an intimate music hall and performance space. With a capacity of about 200 (seated and standing), it’s the perfect stage to experience today’s most talented, on-the-verge artists, up-close-and-personal. Drinks (cash bar) and knishes are available for purchase during shows.

Q. When is the Sixth & I Box Office open?

A. Tickets for select events (most concerts and comedy shows) can be purchased through Sixth & I’s Box Office, by phone or in person. If the box office applies to an event, it will be noted in the event description. Visa and Mastercard are accepted.

  • Phone sales are only taken during administrative business hours: Monday through Thursday, 9:00 am to 5:00 pm and Friday, 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. Call 202.408.3100.
  • In-person sales and picking up tickets occur Monday through Friday, Noon to 3:00 pm. Cash will be accepted in person. Please call ahead of time when coming to pick up tickets so we can have them ready for you, and be sure to bring a photo ID.
  • On the day of an event, the box office typically opens about one hour before the event begins. A valid photo ID that matches the name on the credit card used to purchase the ticket(s) is required for pick-up. Look for directional signs on the day of an event for the box office location.

Q. What is Sixth & I’s refund policy?
A. All ticket sales are final, non-refundable, and non-transferable.

Q. Is there assigned seating at events?

A. Unless noted, seating is general admission, first-come first-served. Seating is in pews (similar to benches) so there are not individual, chair-style seats. Seating is split between the ground floor and a balcony level.

Q. Is there a dress code for events?
A. For religious services, most people come dressed in business casual attire (which can mean anything from jeans to suits). We want you to feel comfortable here, and if that means wearing jeans and a t-shirt, be our guest. If a specific dress code is required, it will be noted in the event description on the website.

Q. How old do you have to be to attend events at Sixth & I? Does my child need to purchase a ticket?
A. Generally, there are no age limitations for Sixth & I events. However, we do have some age specific events, which are clearly indicated on all promotional materials. If you see the phrase “6th in the City,” it means the event is for people in their 20s and 30s. Anything labeled as a “family” program is geared toward families with young children. Any child over the age of two requires a ticket for admittance into an event.

Q. Does Sixth & I sell food and drinks at events?
A. Some events include concession sales. However, we never allow any food or drinks in the sanctuary space.

Q. What restaurants are nearby?

A.  There are many restaurants in the neighborhood, especially along 7th St.

Q. What is Sixth & I’s camera policy?
A.  This varies event to event. Please call ahead to find out what a specific event’s camera policy will be.

Q. Does Sixth & I have a lost and found?
A. Yes. Please call 202.408.3100 if you think you left something at Sixth & I.
