Hot 8 Brass Band
Date: Thursday, June 06, 2013
Time: 8:00 PM
image

New Orleans’ Hot 8 Brass Band was founded in 1995 by tuba player Bennie Pete, Jerome “Bay Bay” Jones (trombone) and Harry “Swamp Thang” Cook (bass drum) to play brass band music professionally. Although many of the current members began playing together in high school, over time the line-up has inevitably shifted and changed, and continues to do so. But any incarnation of Hot 8 Brass Band will boast eight or nine players of the highest rate, bringing the passion and noise through a bevy of trombones, saxophones, trumpets, snare and bass drums, all buoyed up by the immense tuba basslines of band leader Bennie Pete.

In the wake of Hurricane Katrina, the Hot 8 Brass Band was propelled to wider prominence by an appearance in Spike Lee's 2006 documentary When the Levees Broke: A Requiem in Four Acts

From Bagels to Bongos: Arturo O’Farrill & The Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra
with special guests Steven Bernstein and Anat Cohen
Date: Sunday, June 09, 2013
Time: 7:00 PM
image

The relationship between Jewish culture and Latin music dates back to Iberia prior to the Spanish Inquisition, and continued to pre-Castro Cuba - an era when Jewish families would visit the island and its nightclubs. In the decades to follow, resorts started to pop up in the Catskills, and the Jewish community flocked to the Borscht Belt to dance to bands led by Tito Puente, Joe Cuba, and Eddie Palmieri, among others. The burgeoning scene attracted musicians and fans alike and has been described as a "mecca for Latin music," resulting in the mambo being called "the Jewish waltz."

The GRAMMY Award-winning Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra (ALJO) , led by pianist, composer, and director Arturo O’Farrill, brings together sizzling big band jazz, the convergence of traditional Jewish music and Latin Jazz, and the virtuosity of eighteen accomplished musicians, with special guests Steven Bernstein and Anat Cohen. The performance features works by Latin jazz legends such as Tito Puente, Machito, and Chico O’Farrill, as well as classic Jewish melodies.

Admission: Tickets are $25 in advance, $30 on the day of the show (plus applicable service fees) and can be purchased on Ticketmaster.com, by calling 800.745.3000, or visiting Sixth & I Monday - Friday between Noon – 3:00 pm ($1.00 fee per ticket for Sixth & I Box Office purchases). The Heavy

Time: 8:00 PM

English neo-soul band The Heavy play a mix of guitar-heavy rock using funky horns and Curtis Mayfield-like vocals. Their latest album, The Glorious Dead, builds off momentum from The Heavy’s international smash single “How You Like Me Now?,” from the band's acclaimed 2009 album, The House That Dirt Built.

“How You Like Me Now?” became the first song David Letterman’s ever requested an encore for when The Heavy played The Late Show, and the song was featured on Entourage, in the Academy Award-nominated film The Fighter, and the trailer for Ted.

Dan Croll
Date: Sunday, June 16, 2013
Time: 8:00 PM
image After studying at the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts, Dan Croll fully immersed himself in a whole variety of different musical genres, picking off influences from far and wide—the world music of Paul Simon, experimental orchestral work with African choirs, 1960s psychedelia, the early sounds of Mars Volta, Beruit, Bon Iver and then more modern sounds such as Metronomy and Dirty Projectors. The result was an uncharacteristic sound that's a balance between acoustic and digital. As Croll explains, it's "a genre that hasn't got a name."The Liverpool, UK native and emerging indie-rock star recently released his debut album, From Nowhere

The Polyphonic Spree
Date: Saturday, July 06, 2013

Since its founding in 2000 by band leader Tim DeLaughter, the two dozen-member band has had little trouble carving out its own niche. The Polyphonic Spree makes an uplifting blend of pop, orchestral rock, and even a bit of gospel. DeLaughter’s ensemble, with a ten-person choir and soaring sound, puts on a powerful live performance.

The Spree's newest album, Yes It's True, displays somewhat of a new and different sound than in the past: embracing drum machine, and orchestral instruments.

Bombadil
with Samantha Crain
Date: Thursday, July 25, 2013
Time: 8:00 PM
image
A quartet of singers, songwriters and multi-instrumentalists - Stuart Robinson, Daniel Michalak, Bryan Rahija and James Phillips - Bombadil is as much a family as a band, a collective of like-minded friends who just happen to be talented and innovative musicians and multi-instrumentalists. Like all families, they¹ve had their share of ups and downs, break ups and reunions, but the long road they¹ve traveled together has made their bond closer and their music more emotional and intimate. Following up on their 2011 highly acclaimed, All That the Rain Promises, they are now set to release their most melodic and adventurous outing yet, Metrics of Affection, a cornucopia of styles marked by mischievously surrealistic lyrics and their familiar lush harmonies. Their inventive arrangements add funk, country, boogie woogie, rap, early rock and hints of classic pop songwriting, circa 1940, to their already eclectic sound.

Accompanying Bombadil is Samantha Crain who will be promoting Kid Face, her third full-length album (Ramseur Records), a revelatory song cycle as expansive as the wide-open spaces of the 26-year-old artist’s native Oklahoma, and as intimate as a conspiratorial whisper. Recorded and mixed in just eight days in the San Francisco studio of producer John Vanderslice (the Mountain Goats, Spoon), this wildly original album stands as the definitive statement thus far from an uncommonly insightful, fearlessly honest young singer/songwriter.

Limited seating is available in our Downstairs venue. For those who require seating, please call in advance.
Admission: Tickets are $10 in advance, $12 on the day of the show (plus applicable service fees) and can be purchased on Ticketmaster.com, by calling 800.745.3000, or visiting Sixth & I Monday through Friday between noon and 3:00 pm ($1 fee per ticket for Sixth & I Box Office purchases).
